1. You can’t control everything, but you can control your attitude

Colleagues leave, project direction changes, scope broadens or narrows; for the most part, all of these events are inevitable. How you react to these changes is completely up to you. Understanding this helped ground me during transitional phases during my internship and throughout my everyday life. I reached a point where I don’t feel the need to plan every aspect of my future and grew comfortable with the unknown. Of course, push yourself to do better every day but keep in mind that sometimes things will happen and sometimes they won’t.

2. No one knows what they are doing

I’ve had the privilege of working with driven and confident individuals over the last year. This lead me to feel like I had no idea what I’m doing with my life and career. However, as time passed and colleagues turned into friends, I shared these insecurities and to my surprise the feeling was mutual. No matter what age, position, or status you hold, everyone is still figuring things out.

3. How you treat people matters

Your actions and words affect everyone around you. At the end of the day, people will remember you by the way you made them feel. So take a minute and consider what you want that to be. Small actions can really go a long way. Asking someone how their day has been going, praising them for things they’ve done well, or even a simple “good morning” can be very impactful.

4. Your free time is important

The idea that you aren’t making a true impact if you aren’t constantly working is cultivated in many large tech companies. Appreciate the time you have for yourself, friends, and family. These mental and physical breaks truly helped me to recharge and complete better quality work.
